Tourists Ask Where Bodies Are; Rangers Point at Map, Shrug

Visitors continue to ask where the rest of the presidents went. Gutzon Borglum's original models showed the four men down to the waist, but money ran short, Borglum died in March 1941 and the war was coming, so work stopped at the faces.

Park rangers now answer the question by pointing at the brochure and shrugging. 'They're conserving their strength,' one explained. Borglum also planned a Hall of Records behind the heads; a small vault was finally sealed there in 1998, with texts telling the memorial's story.
